Period Education for Caregivers

Every girl deserves to feel supported, confident, and informed as she experiences menstruation. The Period Education Guide for Caregivers helps the important people in the lives of girls provide support with clarity, confidence, and care.

Be her friend, help her grow.

Most caregivers grew up in a world where menstruation was not discussed openly - where confusion and shame filled the gaps left by silence. These same caregivers want different for their daughters - for them to feel confident asking questions, and to know they are supported every step of the way. The Period Education Guide for Caregivers enables facilitators to build confidence among adults so that parents can talk openly with their daughters and support them through puberty.

Get started right away and turn uncertainty and stigma into trust, understanding, and lifelong confidence.

Breaking the cycle

The training creates space for caregivers to reflect on their own experiences – often shaped by silence, stigma, or lack of support. From that reflection, they identify what they want to be different for their daughters. In doing so, they begin to build a more open, supportive future.

Group-based

The training creates a space for caregivers to come together, learn from one another, and share their experiences openly. In this group setting, conversations that were once difficult become normalised, and confidence grows through connection.

Confidence-building

In the training, caregivers learn the basics of puberty and menstruation - but more importantly, they build the confidence to talk with their daughters and support them through these changes with empathy and trust.

What caregivers learn

The training is designed for caregivers of girls aged 9-14. It unpacks how to normalise conversations, create a shared understanding of puberty and menstruation, and break taboos. With the Guide facilitators empower caregivers to play an active support role in their child's puberty experience.

In the training, caregivers learn:

  • The basics about the female anatomy, the menstrual cycle, and its symptoms

  • What kind of products exist and how to use them

  • How to debunk myths and break taboos related to menstruation

  • How to normalise conversations around sensitive topics

The Guide for Caregivers is a great place to start, but the learning doesn't have to end there. Make sure to discover our Period Education Guides for girls and boys and bring Period Education to everyone in your community.

With the right solution, educating girls about menstruation is wonderfully straightforward. The Guide for Girls makes it easy to deliver engaging period education, equipping girls with the knowledge and confidence they need to navigate their periods.

Boys should also learn about periods – after all, they shape a big part of the environment girls grow up in. With the Guide for Boys, facilitators lead education sessions in which boys learn about their own puberty, gain an understanding of menstruation, and learn how to show up as allies.

FAQs

Do you have a question? Here, we have listed the most common questions about the Period Education Guide for Caregivers.

Who should be invited to join the caregivers' period education training?

Parents and/or guardians of adolescents can be invited to attend the period education session for caregivers.

Can fathers or male caregivers also attend?

Yes! We encourage fathers and male caregivers to also attend the training so they know how to support their children better.

What is the ideal group size for a training?

We recommend a group size of 20–30 participants per facilitator. This allows for an engaging, interactive experience, ensuring that everyone participates and benefits from the training.

Can men also be trainers of the Period Education Guide for Caregivers?

Yes! The Guide is designed to be delivered by trainers irrespective of their gender. However, if the session is being held exclusively for female participants we recommend women as facilitators.

What location is most suitable to conduct the training?

An undisturbed space where participants feel safe and comfortable to talk openly works best; it can be a classroom, a sports ground, or a community hall.

Do you have flyers to give the caregivers after the training?

There are no take-homematerials as part of the Period Education Guide training. Only the current version of the Guide for Sub-Saharan Africa includes an optional Reference Guide that can be given to caregivers to take home.

Do the facilitators need a training of trainers?

No formal training of trainers is required. The Period Education Guide provides clear, step-by-step instructions that make it straightforward for any facilitator to run a session confidently without prior expertise in menstrual health and hygiene.

Do we need print-outs of the Guide?

No, caregivers do not need their own copy. Only the facilitator needs access to the Guide, so even a digital version could be used instead.

What kind of impact data do I need to collect?

All you need to collect is the number of caregivers you trained. Other information, like your feedback or any images are always welcome, but optional.

Does yes.period provide financial support to partners?

yes.period is not in a position to provide financial support. The Period Education Guide for Caregivers is specifically designed to keep implementation costs low, all you need is a copy of the Guide.

Do you provide print-outs of the Guide?

No, we cannot provide print-outs, but even one copy is enough to conduct the training. Printing in black and white is absolutely fine – it keeps costs low, reduces our footprint, and does not impact the quality of the training.

Can we make modifications to the guides

The guide is copyright-protected, so please do not modify it without prior written permission from yes.period, any alterations could impact the effectiveness of the training. That said, if you need the guide in another language or would like contextual adaptations for a large-scale programme, we'd love to hear from you!
